Located in the Southern Lakes region of New Zealand’s lower South Island, Queenstown is the gateway to some of the best winter snow sports plus year round lake and alpine scenery and activities in the world!
Getting to Queenstown is relatively easy with a few options available to suit your budget and time frame. Well served by major airlines, Air New Zealand and Qantas fly from several Australian main airports into Queenstown. If you are already in New Zealand, there are several flight connections from New Zealand’s main centres such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
Once you land at Queenstown airport you can easily connect with an airport transfer shuttle bus to take you on the very short drive into the heart of Queenstownyou’re your accommodation.
Queenstown also has a couple of genuine taxi services that can provide commuting within the region, including airport transfers.
For self-drive tours, the roads into Queenstown are incredibly scenic and well sealed. However if you prefer to enjoy the scenic highlights while someone else does the driving then there are plenty of shuttle buses and coach lines (such as Newmans and Intercity) operating to and from Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill and the West Coast.
For scenic Queenstown bus tours I highly recommend The Arrowtown Bus, which takes you from Queenstown to historic Arrowtown and back, offers a wonderful local tour including commentary and photo stops. Daily shuttle bus services are also available for those wanting to visit nearby scenic Lake Wanaka for a day (or longer). Another popular option is the BBQ Bus that provides scenic day trips from Queenstown into Milford Sound and return.
During the popular winter ski and snowboarding season, there are plenty of Ski Bus Shuttle services available that will pick you up from your accommodation, take you up your chosen ski mountain and back again at the end of the day. This is probably the safest and most convenient way for visitors to enjoy the Queenstown ski season.
If flying is more your Queenstown touring style, there is a great range of flight seeing options that will showcase the best of the Southern Lakes in a comfortable and safe ‘birds eye view’. Of course many people visit Queenstown for romantic getaways or luxury escapes, and what better way to be transported around Queenstown then a limo or chauffeur driven luxury vehicle. From classic jaguar cars to executive 4WD tours, London style taxis and luxury stretch limousines, this is the place to enjoy exceptional Queenstown transportation!
For the more budget minded, having your own rental cars gives you the independence to come and go as you please, and there are some really good rental car companies located in Queenstown that offer a range of suitable vehicles to rent, including 4WD, budget, sedan and mini vans.
Of course, for the true budget Queenstown traveller that really wants to enjoy the beautiful natural alpine surrounds that is Queenstown, there are plenty of mountain bikes and mopeds to be rented on an hourly or daily basis!
