The Hurunui hosts many local and major events that attract national and international attention, such as the Waipara Wine and Food Celebration, held in March each year.
Agricultural and Pastoral Shows are held throughout New Zealand each year and are a chance for the farming community to compete with their prized stock, such as sheep, cattle, poultry, goats, etc.
Supported by the local community, each A & P Show also features popular competitions such as equestrian sports, dog trials, animal fancy dress contests and baking contests.
A & P Shows have a real carnival air about them and are a fun way for the family to spend a day in the country. Two popular Hurunui A & P Shows are held each year, the Cheviot A & P Show and the Hawarden A & P Show. Both offer visitors the opportunity to experience a traditional North Canterbury A & P Show.
The Waipara Valley Wine and Food Celebration is truly the main event for the Waipara Valley Wine region. Approximately 16 wineries are represented along with a fantastic selection of food stalls – something for everyone and another opportunity to enjoy a sunny day in the countryside.
Other local sporting and recreational events are held throughout the year, including popular mountain biking competitions, beach surf casting competitions and golf tournaments.
