The wild West Coast stands apart from the rest of the country as a region where the pioneering spirit and rugged individualism are distinctive characteristics of the people.
The narrow 600 km strip of coastal lowland is hemmed in by towering ramparts of the Southern Alps and the tumultuous breaking swells of the Tasman Sea. Prevailing westerly winds buffet the exposed coastline and the small communities that enjoy the relative isolation and many other benefits this region offers.
Pre-eminent amongst these is the freedom to pursue outdoor adventure activities such as hunting, fishing, caving, climbing, kayaking, rafting, horse trekking and of course – golfing.
The 7 golf courses in this region are listed below together with a brief description of some of the notable ones.
Greymouth is a par 72 course located on Rochford Road, Kaiata, not far out of town. The terrain is undulating and the fairways are surrounded by fine stands of native bush notable for the profusion of tree ferns and attractive vegetation. The course is rarely crowded and when taken at a leisurely pace it can be a lot of fun to play.
Westport is located on Marine Parade at Carter’s Beach quite close to town and south of the Buller River. This par 72 course is a classic links-style design and it offers players a worthwhile challenge in carding a score below 80. Some of the well-placed bunkers are exceptionally deep and like to retain possession of the ball.
Hokitika is located just 10 km south of town on the coast. This 72 par course has quite narrow fairways, which parallel the beach and the sand hills don’t offer the level of wind protection that you might hope for. Driving low and straight off the tees is the desirable tactic for mastering this testing course.
