As one of Tasmania’s oldest national parks, Mt Field National Park offers stunning walks through enormous fern forests and you will find some of the tallest trees in the world right here!
Mt Field National Park is just over one hour’s drive from Hobart View New Norfolk. The Mt Field Visitor Centre is located near the park entrance. Entry fees apply and you can purchase Park Passes from the Visitor Centre.
Here is a fabulous opportunity to view some of the tallest trees in Australia! The tall Swamp Gums of Mt Field are so high that visitors have the opportunity to use a clinometer to calculate the height of these massive giants of the forest.
The swamp gum, Eucalyptus regnans, is the tallest flowering plant on Earth and on this circuit walk you will meander through an impressive forest of these giants. The largest of these trees were growing when Abel Tasman first sighted Tasmania in 1642!
The walk is approximately 1km return and walkers should allow 30 minutes return for this trip.
The route is graded Level 2, which means it is an easy walk suitable for most fitness levels, however Level 2 tracks may have occasional steps and/or a formed gravel or hardened surface.
Walkers should ensure they have sturdy walking shoes or boots, sun hat and sun block.
It is recommended that you do not walk here in strong winds or stormy weather.
No pets, firearms or bicycles are permitted on the track.
Park entry fees DO apply.
Facilities:
You will find the public toilets, electric barbecues, kiosk and Visitors Centre all located near the start of the track.
Vehicle Access:
From New Norfolk take road B62 and then B61. If you are travelling from Lake St Clair then take road B61 from the Lyell Highway (A10), just east of Gretna.
